On the limits of the relation of disgust to judgments of immorality

چکیده
Two correlational studies (ns = 400; 90) examined the association of judgments of immorality and disgust (hypothesized in much current research and theory). Across 40 scenarios in Study 1, immorality was positively correlated with negative emotions, especially anger. With anger partialed, disgust was significantly, but weakly, correlated with immorality, r(38) = 0.22, p < 0.05. Study 2 asked whether the immorality-disgust correlation is due to a confound: immoral events often include elements implicitly or explicitly implying pathogens, such as blood or semen. Across 22 scenarios, those implying pathogens were associated with disgust, but those without pathogens, whether moral or immoral, rarely were. We propose that the relation between disgust and immorality is largely coincidental, resulting from (a) using the word disgust to express anger with or even dislike of immoral acts and (b) the presence of incidental elements capable of eliciting disgust.

Investigation of the Moderating Role of Perceived Vulnerability to Infectious Diseases Regarding the Relationship between Disgust and Fear of Contamination
Background and Objective: Several studies revealed that disgust as an emotional response underlies the contamination fears in Contamination Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Other studies supported the role of cognitions related to contagion and disease in contamination OCD. The present study aimed to integrate these two lines of evidence. To this end, regarding the concept of the behavioral...

To address this knowledge gap, participants high (HHD) and low (LHD) in homosexual disgust provided disgust an...
متن کاملHarm Mediates Disgust-Immorality Link 1 RUNNING HEAD: Harm Mediates Disgust-Immorality Link Harm Mediates the Disgust-Immorality Link
Many acts are disgusting, but only some of these acts are immoral. Dyadic morality predicts that disgusting acts should be judged as immoral to the extent that they seem harmful. Consistent with this prediction, three studies reveal that perceived harm mediates the link between feelings of disgust and moral condemnation—even for ostensibly harmless “purity” violations. In many cases, accounting...
متن کاملThe Mediational Roles of Law of Contagion and Threat Estimations in the Relation Between Disgust and Contamination-Based OCD Symptoms
Goal: The law of contagion is one of the sympathetic magic principals and is a cognitive distortion related with disgust. To explain how and with which mechanism, disgust can lead to contamination-OCD symptoms, the present study supposes that the emotion of disgust can activate the law of contagion which in turn may motivate threat estimations that finally, results in OCD symptoms. Method: Thi...
متن کاملInfection, Incest, and Iniquity: Investigating the Neural Correlates of Disgust and Morality
Disgust, an emotion related to avoiding harmful substances, has been linked to moral judgments in many behavioral studies. However, the fact that participants report feelings of disgust when thinking about feces and a heinous crime does not necessarily indicate that the same mechanisms mediate these reactions. Humans might instead have separate neural and physiological systems guiding aversive ...
